Exploring the changing realities of the Koli community of Mumbai. One of Mumbai's native inhabitants who live along its coastline have seen it all, from the 7 islands to the bustling and ever growing metropolis that the city has now become.
Shot across three Koliwadas, the urban fishing villages in which the Koli’s reside, in Khar Danda, Madh and Versova, we have tried to mirror the Kolis as they navigate through their daily lives, from the sea where they go to catch the fish early morning, to the fish auctions at the end of each day and the time in between where life has other things in store for them.
After studying at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Abhro joined the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute to study cinema where he worked on a bunch of student films. He then received a grant from the Charles Correa Foundation to make a documentary on the Koli Community of Mumbai. His interests lie in making films about people in urban India and India’s colonial past. In his free time, you might find him nerding out on Geography, watching videos on world history or cooking.
Akash Ajgaonkar is an engineer turned photographer and filmmaker from Mumbai. His experience ranges from commercial photography and films for brands to documentary filmmaking. When he isn’t on set, he is either watching films, researching interesting subjects, documenting the streets or cooking.
Debadrita is an Economics Hons graduate with a Master’s in Development Studies from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She is keen on working in the area of Public Health and WASH. She comes from a research background and believes nuance and empathy should be at the core of development processes. She enjoys watching films, cooking and dancing when she is not working her day job as a research analyst.
Viraj has done his B.Arch from Mumbai University. He has worked on various interior and architectural projects. He has also worked on a research project with IIT Roorkee. His interest lies in understanding and researching urban issues and developing relevant solutions for the same. During his free time Viraj enjoys reading books, watching films and gaming.
